Opening day of the exhibition “Human – center and value”, Rene Dantes

Foundation for Concrete Art Roland Phleps (Freiburg, Germany) showcases new exhibition “Human – center and value”. At the opening day on September 9 visitors were able to see not only the works of artist Rene Dantes (sculptures, paintings and drawings), but also got an opportunity to speak to the artist.

Rene Dantes studied painting at the Fine Arts Academy in Vienna. After graduating from the academy he expanded his artistic education and became a sculptor at the National Fine Arts School in Paris. The artist always said that the main theme of his works was always a human, and the interest in sculpture was sparked by his interest in the human anatomy. His first works were created in the academic style, but this served as a push for his further professional development. It was during this period of time that he understood that he was interested in three dimensional art and with the help of minimization he found his own style of work. These days in his creativity, the artist is moving on a thin line where association ends and abstraction starts.

The Dantes sculptures presented at the exhibition are made of stainless and corten steel, and they demonstrate unique play of form. His paintings and drawings reflect the motives of his sculptures, and the color palette shows clear parallels with the three dimensionals works of the artist.

After the official exhibition opening, Rene Dantes talked about some of the aspects of his work. The artist always thoroughly thinks through his works and choice of the material is closely related to his initial idea. During the last few years Dantes has worked mainly with steel, but he does not forget about his work with wood, stone or bronze. Creation of the sculpture is a labour-intensive process, material is under a huge pressure and to create the sculpture one needs to apply a lot of strength. Nevertheless, created works give viewer the sense of lightness and elegance that discloses the absolute form of a sculpture even stronger. Besides his desire to understand the human essence, Dantes pays attention to the organic forms adopted from nature. Again the main themes are the vitality and development that are closely connected to a topic of humans.
